【Knowledge】 Story in the Snow - Chapter Four : Find the Legendary Thunderbird

Legend has it that the thunderbird can summon lightning, and their sounds are like thunder. It’s very hard to see on an ordinary trip.

Legend has it that the thunderbird can summon lightning, and their sounds are like thunder. It’s very hard to see in an ordinary trip. Some tour guides who had worked over twenty years had never seen thunderbirds. It is so-called the god bird in Japan.

When we arrived at the mountain, one of the members shouted that he saw the thunderbird. Everyone was excited.
“Where is it?”
“It’s over there.”
Everyone looked over the direction he pointed and took photos non-stop.
One of them suddenly took out a professional camera and zoomed in to take more photos.
“It is just a stone.” this person suddenly became aware that it was not a thunderbird.
All the people paused and burst into laughter.
What they took tens of photos of was just a stone that looked like a thunderbird.

在冬天的雪裡,雷鳥的羽毛是白色像雪一樣看不出來;

Thunderbirds’ feathers change when the season changes for protective coloration.
In the winter, their feathers turn white which is hard to see in the snow.
In the summer, their feathers are combined with white, grey, and black, which make them look like stone.

Look at the picture below. Don't their feathers look like stones in the snow or meadow?

Look at the pictures. Where are the thunderbirds?

Did you see it? The thunderbirds were hiding in the stones.

Is thunderbird’s sound really as powerful as thunder?
In fact, few people have heard it. However, someone who luckily heard its sound said it was totally different from what we imagined.

Thunderbird’s sound is not like thunder actually. It was like “ur...ur...urr…”, which was pretty similar to burping. (Or were they actually burping?)

Besides the thunderbirds in Japan, there are also thunderbirds in China and America.
In North American Indian myth, legend has it that there was a kind of gigantic bird which looks like an eagle, but much bigger. They were called “thunderbird” because they can summon thunder and lightning.
In ancient Indian stories, we can see many pictures of bears, eagles, horses, and wolves.
Let’s find those animals in the stories!
