【Ecology] Humans and Animals - Chapter 3: Friendly Treatment

In the world of animals, we vilify, snatch, and kill them unconsciously until they look at us with tears…

【Little Story 1】

Human over-intervention

(1) Mr. Wolf’s once said in the ecological class. “People use stories to educate children, but they use these stories to vilify carnivorous animals. For example, the fairy tales we used to hear when we were little: the big wolf eats the grandma, the tiger aunt eats the little finger, and the werewolves and the vixen are evil, etc…

(2) Human beings culled almost all of them, their numbers dropped sharply, and they became endangered species. Some had even gone extinct, evolving into a large increase in herbivorous animals. The forests and grasslands were then crowded with herbivorous animals, resulting in insufficient food, and eating saplings caused a sharp decline in the number of forests. They started to enter farms for food, and then humans culled these herbivorous animals causing ecological imbalance.

This problem was discovered in Yellowstone National Park in the United States a long time ago, and they began to breed wolves. The number of wolves does increase now.

【Small Story 2】

Once we took a family with kids to an eco-tour. The mom told the kid that they would meet wolves, horses, and deer during the tour, but the kid didn’t seem happy. The next morning, the kid cried and said he had dreamed of being bitten by a big wild wolf.

After the eco-tour, the children found that wolves were not scary at all, instead, they looked like handsome dogs. They also understood the importance of ecology and often thought of wolves after the trip.

Once, another family took their children to participate in the eco-tour. In the beginning, the tour guide reminded everyone that because wolves have sharp ears, they should not speak loudly. The little brothers and sisters listened to the explanation very carefully, not afraid of wolves at all.

Mother whispered to the little brother and sister, not to speak too loudly.

This three-year-old girl said to her brother very seriously. "Brother! Hush! Be quiet, don't speak, you will disturb the wolf! "(in a very loud voice)

"..." The brother didn't say a word.

【Little Knowledge】 The balance of the food chain

In the animal food chain, carnivorous animals (tigers, snow leopards, wolves, etc.) are at the top; herbivorous animals (livestock: yaks, horses, domestic sheeps, etc.) (wild: deer, bharals, hares, etc.) are in the middle; plants (forests, grasslands, saplings, etc.) are at the bottom.

Human beings eat almost all the organisms consumed in the first to fourth times of the marine ecological food chain, causing the overall marine ecological imbalance.

【Little Story 3】

Humans over-snatch calf's food (milk)?

Once we took a family to a Japanese ranch. The activities included milking cows, feeding animals, drinking fresh milk and eating ice cream.

At first, everyone was very happy. When the group started to experience, the rancher brought a female cow. The cow was actually pregnant and had a big belly. We disinfected our hands first, and then started milking the cow. Suddenly we found the cow looking at us in tears, I felt a little bit sad for her. Suddenly a mother said that she would not milk the cows, seeing the cow crying was pitiful. In the end, everyone decided not to milk the cows and went to other activities. In hindsight, is such an activity appropriate? The cow was already uncomfortable because of pregnancy and lactation. It was very unfriendly to the animals if we insisted to milk the cow.

In the early traditional stock farming in Europe and America, the owners of the ranch also milked the cow with hand and at an appropriate amount. Humans raised these dairy cows, the calves drank cow milk, and the excess milk was appropriately used as human food, which was friendly.

Tibetans graze the yak naturally. They let the calves drink the yak milk first and use the excess yak milk to make butter tea (Tibetan milk tea) and ghee (cream). If there’s still left, they then sell it.

The ecological tour guide told a story of this milk. Modern people need milk from babies to the elderly. The demand for dairy products has soared, forcing these cows to be pregnant and lactate. Then they let these newborn calves drink milk powder. Humans overuse the bodies of dairy cows and make these dairy cows overwhelmed. Is this milk delicious? We should use it appropriately and treat animals more friendly.
